New home, prepping for a new year and honoring those who serve
READY FOR 2023? Grab a calendar, block dates and go visit some National Parks
Hello KIRC family!
This will be a quick update, but one I wanted to make sure to pass along before another day goes by.
We have moved!
Keeping It REAL Caregiving has officially made the move to our new home at Substack.
Thank you for staying with me on this journey. Not much will change about how KIRC shares information. The only difference is the platform provider.
I extend a huge dose of gratitude to Meta Bulletin for the opportunity to be a part of a visionary tool to deliver information. But now, we are looking forward to the next phase.
If you have enjoyed what KIRC has been doing, please share with your friends, family, colleagues and anyone you believe could benefit.
Veterans Day 2022
KIRC extends a belated recognition to our nation’s Veterans (including my brother, several nephews and my now deceased father). Thank you for your service, dedication and commitment to protecting our nation
Most of you know that many establishments offer discounts to Veterans on the holiday, but did you know there are other businesses which offer discounts all year?
Veteran discounts all year
Plus, there is another ‘THANK YOU’ being extended to those who have served. From the U.S. Department of the Interior:
WASHINGTON — Today, the Biden-Harris administration announced that starting on Veterans Day (Nov. 11), veterans of the U.S. Armed Services and Gold Star Families can obtain a free lifetime pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites spread out across more than 400 million acres of public lands, including national parks, wildlife refuges, and forests.
“We have a sacred obligation to America’s veterans. This new lifetime pass is a small demonstration of our nation’s gratitude and support for those who have selflessly served in the U.S. Armed Forces,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, whose father served during the Vietnam War. “I’m proud the Department of the Interior can provide veterans and Gold Star Families opportunities for recreation, education and enjoyment from our country’s treasured lands.”

Ready for 2023?
Hard to believe, but 2023 is just around the corner! Do you have your calendar for the new year?
Keeping It REAL Caregiving would like to support the efforts of a fellow caregiver.
I introduced you earlier this year to Julie Cook-Downing. She was a family caregiver to both of her parents and for years has worked to help aging Veterans.
She is the mastermind behind Caregivers’ Comfort Creations. She provides a variety of calendars, date books and motivational items - all designed to give that extra little dose of “support” to those on the caregiving journey.
Visit Caregivers’ Comfort Creations to order your 2023 items and use promo code KIRC for a special offer.
KIRC extends a warm hug and thank you to Mrs. Cook-Downing for her devotion to helping others!
And finally… reader comments
Thank you to the entire KIRC tribe. I LOVE hearing from you and it is a wonderful feeling to know that this work can and is making a difference!
Gerontology: What it is and why you might want to get on board
“It was so exciting to see your article on Gerontology! I am currently a student and this is my Major! I want to work with the LGBTQ aging community! I'm so proud to be in the field!”
“Good article here on the role of palliative care; I also recommend people inquire whether the doctors are board certified in the field; it is one of the fastest growing specialties today.”
Let’s keep this sharing of information and mutual support rolling!
Until next time~
Julia
