Love, romance & aging : more than just Valentine's Day to think about...
Happy Valetine's Day! KIRC offers up your caregiving calendar for the week of February 13, 2022
Happy Super Bowl Sunday! For those of you planning to watch the game, I hope your team wins.
(Notice how I didn't mention which team?) I confess, I am not much of a football fan, so I’ll be spending this day on other pursuits.
We’re also preparing to celebrate the holiday of love. So let me be one of the first to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day.
In the spirit of all things romance and companionship, let’s kick off this week’s round-up of events with a look at online dating and some safety steps to keep in mind.

National Council on Aging
Sweetheart Scams: How to Stay Safe with Online Dating
Time: 3PM Eastern - 12PM Pacific
Event Description: Online dating can be fun, but it's also important to stay safe. Older adults are a common target for sweetheart scammers since they have more cash savings and a tendency to be trusting. Adults 60 and older also tend to be less informed about online scams in general.

2. Transportation
This next event is not directly focused in the caregiving space, but transportation is a key component and consideration for many elders or family members caring for them.
Depending on where you live, access to services and care is directly related to being able to ‘get’ to where you need to be. Learning more about how to influence and improve your local transportation options is never a bad idea.

American Planning Association/California Chapter Northern
Riding with Transportation Equity
Time: 10:00 AM Pacific
Event description: How can the transportation industry approach issues of diversity and accessibility in the workforce, in transit riders, and in the community? How can we overcome historic and current injustices both by taking action now and by laying the groundwork for further transformation down the road?

3. Advance Care Planning
Sometimes ‘events’ are actually ongoing efforts to engage and learn. That’s the case with this Call for Research Applicants coming in from the University of Southern California, Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.
A researcher is seeking participants who are 50 and over, who identify as lesbian or gay. The principal investigator, Meki Singleton, MSW, has the following information included in the response form:
Description: The purpose of this study is to look at differences in beliefs about and actions around advance care planning, wishes for medical care, and healthcare experiences among older lesbian and gay adults. We hope to learn how racial and sexual minority identity may influence advance care planning.

4. Livable communities
Here’s a question for you. How livable is your community? It may seem like a simple question, but as we age, there are specific items we must consider, including:
Transportation
Access to care
Quality of care
The environment
Opportunities for inclusion, and more...
I urge you to take a few minutes to see how your community ranks on the AARP Livability Index.
It is a good way to get a glimpse at what areas of policy you might want to begin getting involved with to ensure you and your loved ones have what you need as you age.
According to AARP, livability means:
“A livable community is one that is safe and secure, has affordable and appropriate housing and transportation options, and has supportive community features and services. Once in place, those resources enhance personal independence; allow residents to age in place; and foster residents’ engagement in the community’s civic, economic, and social life."
– The Policy Book: AARP Public Policies
You can check out the index here.
I gotta tell you folks, my community here in Northern California didn’t score that great, reaching only 48 out of 100.
Looks like my region has some work to do!
On that cheery note, I guess I better get back to trying to impact change in whatever ways possible.
Until next time~
